A group wellness session is a live class, workshop or webinar led by an expert, where you learn and practise alongside other people. Topics range from mindfulness and yoga to stress relief and everyday coping skills. It is often an easier first step than one-to-one therapy: lower pressure, less to prepare, and you are not the only one in the room.
What a group session is, and is not
A group session is structured and led by an expert. It is usually built around a theme, such as managing stress, or a practical skill, such as breathing techniques, rather than around any one person's story.
It is not a replacement for individual therapy. If you need support for something specific or personal, a one-to-one session is the better fit. Many people use both: group sessions for learning and routine, and one-to-one sessions for depth.
Who group sessions suit
First-timers who want to dip a toe in before booking therapy
People who learn well with others and like the shared energy of a class
Anyone building a routine, for example a weekly mindfulness or movement habit
People watching their budget, since sessions are generally lower in cost than one-to-one
What to expect
Every session is different, so check the listing for details. In general you can expect:
A clear topic. The description tells you what the session will cover.
A live expert guiding the session, often with some explanation and some practice.
Other participants. You are free to take part at your own comfort level.
A set date, time and price, shown on the listing, so you can plan around it.
How to choose a session
Start with the topic. Pick something relevant to what you are going through, or something that simply sounds enjoyable.
Look at who is leading it. Read the expert's background to see whether their approach appeals to you.
Check the time. A session you can attend live is better than one you have to skip.
Try more than one. Different experts have different styles.
How group sessions compare with one-to-one
A group session
Focus: a shared topic or skill
Pace: set by the expert
Privacy: other participants attend
Cost: generally lower
A one-to-one session
Focus: your personal situation
Pace: set with you
Privacy: just you and the expert
Cost: set by each expert, and shown on their profile
Looking after yourself in a group
If anything comes up that feels like too much, it is fine to step away, turn your camera off, or leave and come back. Taking care of yourself is part of the practice.
